First established in 1856, Burberry is a brand that has a rich British history and heritage. From humble beginnings in Basingstoke, when founder Thomas Burberry was just 21, to a worldwide global success story as we know it today, Burberry is a brand synonymous with luxury and style. Famous for its iconic Burberry trench coat, Thomas Burberry invented Gabardine in 1879 and patented it in 1888; this hardwearing fabric transformed rainwear, making it weather-proof yet breathable and not as heavy to wear as its predecessors. The trench coat was later adapted for everyday wear and by 1965, 20% of the coats exported from Britain were made by Burberry. The Burberry trench coat, completely manufactured in the UK at the famous Castleford site, is still one of the brands most famous pieces to date and is a popular choice in men's, women's and children's wear.
From the year 2000, Burberry has gone from strength to strength, opening stores globally and becoming the first brand to stream fashion shows live on the internet, under the watchful eye of creative director and CEO at the time, Christopher Bailey. Then when Ricardo Tisci took the helm as Chief Creative Officer in 2018, the brand was completely transformed again with a new logo and branding. The new logo, a collaboration with Peter Saville features ‘Burberry London England’ in bold black type, whilst the monogram features an interlocking TB pattern in a red and white colour palette, a complete departure from the brand’s equestrian knight logo. The brand’s famous club check is still a feature of many of its designs and is still used as a lining for the Burberry adults and Burberry kids trench coats, and as a design feature for Burberry kids shirts, Burberry baby outfits and Burberry swimwear. Ricardo Tisci, has transformed Burberry into a fashion world leader, at the forefront of both luxury and sustainability.
