Neil Barrett: A history

Neil Barrett Cool Kids Clothes 208

Neil Barrett has had an amazing fashion career thus far, and has worked at some of the most prestigious fashion houses in the world, first designing menswear and then branching out into women’s and childrenswear.  This is the story of our Neil Barrett Cool Kids Clothes 2018.  Born in Devon, South West England to a family of three generations of tailors on his paternal side, Neil Barrett became obsessed with cut and finish and wanted to pursue this and his love of fashion further.  Studying at Central Saint Martin’s School and then the Royal College of Art in London, Barrett graduated and began his career at Florentine-based Gucci, where he went on to become senior men’s designer.  After spending five years at Gucci, Neil approached Prada’s CEO Patrizio Bertelli with an idea to start a men’s line at the company; 8 months later Prada Menswear was born.  His work at Prada was incredibly influential and helped start a blueprint for minimal menswear combining luxurious fabrics with unparalleled Italian craftsmanship and high-tech sportswear.  After his success at Prada, Barrett founded his own-named label in 1999 and debuted it on the runway in 2000 at Pitti Uomo, Florence.  There are hallmarks associated with Neil Barrett fashion such as precisely cut tailoring, accurate detailing and athletic elements that cover a wide spectrum of fits to cater to a diversity of markets.  Think of Neil Barrett fashion as a modern interpretation of menswear staples; streamlined styling for the 21st Century.  Much of this translates beautifully into both menswear and childrenswear.

In 2003, Neil Barrett collaborated with Puma on sports shoes and became creative director for a series of Puma tech collections.  As part of this, Barrett also designed the Italian national team’s on pitch kit and formalwear; they went on to win the 2006 World Cup.

In 2009, Neil Barrett chose to strengthen the heart of his brand by creating a product division based in Tuscany, seeing 85% of his collections made in Italy, supporting Italian fabric mills and artisan producers.  Similarly in 2011, Barrett decided to strengthen distribution.  He opened a boutique in prestigious shopping mall The Landmark in Hong Kong, following this with two more brand openings in Seoul, South Korea.  Throughout this Barrett partnered with architect Zaha Hadid for his store concepts, launching stores in Beijing, Shanghai, Macau and Hangzou.
