Black Friday coming to Designer Childrenswear
When is Black Friday?
This year, Black Friday is on Friday 29th November, 2019. Designer Childrenswear will be participating in some Black Friday deals this year, so keep checking back for more information as it arrives!
What is Black Friday and where did it originate?
Black Friday is the informal name of the Friday that follows Thanksgiving in the United States (Thanksgiving traditionally is the fourth Thursday in November). Black Friday is known as the beginning of the American Christmas shopping season and is observed as an unofficial holiday. As many people are off work, Black Friday is viewed as the first shopping day of the Christmas period, with many shops dropping their prices to kickstart the festive shopping period. It’s also traditionally the first day that children could visit Santa.
In the 1980s, Black Friday was used by retailers to refer to the day of the year that retail companies finally made a profit (went into the black) after being in the red for most of the year. However, this is not the reason why Black Friday as we know it today got its name. The term Black Friday was originally coined by police reporter Joseph P. Barrett in Philadelphia in 1994 and referred to the horrific traffic jams that happened when people poured into town on the Friday after Thanksgiving to start their Christmas shopping.
Black Friday was adopted by the UK around 2010 and slowly began to build momentum. Then by 2014, Black Friday was the peak pre-Christmas online sales day.
Black Friday in history
The term Black Friday has also been used to describe many awful historic events. The crash of the US gold market in 1869, the Battle of George Square in Glasgow in 1919 and harrowing Fridays during the Second World War are all examples of ‘Black Fridays’ throughout history. Most famously, on a Friday in November 1910, hundreds of suffragettes marched on Parliament during a peaceful protest but were assaulted and arrested by the police. Thankfully, apart from heavy traffic and shops bursting at the seams with customers, the Black Friday as we know it today is a much more peaceful affair!
