Whenever Burberry is mentioned, you immediately think of British Heritage. Known best for their iconic trench coats, nova check and the Prorsum knight logo, Burberry has been outfitting British people from all walks of life since 1856.

Founded by Thomas Burberry at the tender age of 21, an apprentice draper by trade. Initially specialising in outerwear, Thomas invented a new fabric, gabardine in 1879. A blend of worsted wool or cotton and polyester, the fabric completely changed rainwear, which in the Victorian era was usually really heavy and uncomfortable, absorbing water rather than repelling it. Following this success, Thomas opened is first London store in 1891.

1912 saw the debut of the now iconic trench coat, known at the time as ‘Tielocken’. The garment was further developed throughout the early 20th century, particularly for the military during the First World War. Epaulettes on the shoulders indicated and officer’s rank and the D-rings on the belt were used to attach equipment.

Burberry became the favoured outfitter to polar explorers such as Sir Ernest Shackleton. The waterproof and lightweight qualities of the gabardine fabric were ideal in the harsh Antartic weather conditions. Gabardine also lent it’s tactile qualities to aviation. Burberry flight suits were worn by Betty Kirby-Green and Flying Officer Arthur Clouston n their record breaking 45 hour flight from London to Cape Town in 1937.

Burberry has gone through many changes in modern times. After losing sales and reputation as a high end brand in the early 2000’s, thanks to the adoption of the (often counterfeit) check print by ‘chav’ and ‘football hooligan’ culture, Burberry was rescued by creative director Christopher Bailey and and CEO at the time Angela Ahrendts. Together they restored Burberry back to its former glory by producing collections known for high quality and exclusivity. Since joining as creative director, Christopher Bailey has gone from strength to strength; he was made CEO in 2014 and is now creative director and president since 2016.

Christopher Bailey designs the Burbery baby and kid’s collections. Romeo Beckham famously modeled for the brand-wide Christmas campaign in 2015.
