Calvin Klein, where did it all start?

Designer Calvin Klein was born in New York in November 1942 to a Hungarian-Jewish family.  After attending Isobel Rooney Middle school as a child, he attended the High School of Art and Design, going on to study at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology.  Although he didn’t graduate, he received an honorary doctorate from the institute in 2003.  In 1968, Calvin Klein founded Calvin Klein Limited with his friend Barry K. Schwartz, setting up a coat shop in the York Hotel with $10,000.  His debut collection was a line of youthful yet understated coats and dresses.  Just a year later, Klein’s designs appeared on the cover of the September issue of American Vogue.  In 1971, Klein added sportswear, blazers and lingerie to his women’s collection.  Such was his success that in 1973 he received the prestigious Coty American Fashion Critic’s Award for his 74-piece womenswear collection, being the youngest recipient of the award (he went on to win it again in 1974 and in 1975). From then on, Klein’s success continued to grow and grow; by 1977 he had licenses for scarves, shoes, belts, furs, sunglasses and sheets, not to mention sales of 200, 000 pairs of his famous jeans during their first week of being on the market.  Probably one of Klein’s greatest achievements as a designer was his transformation of the underwear market in the 1980s.  Launching a highly successful line of boxer shorts for women, and a men’s underwear collection, he grossed $70 million dollars in a single year.  Klein changed the market for men’s underwear from being something that was purchased infrequently by wives, mothers and girlfriends for their men, to something that men cared about buying for themselves, where they were conscious of the style and branding.

The growth of Calvin Klein continued throughout the eighties, with clothes sold in 12,000 stores in the United States and available in six other countries, with worldwide retail sales reaching $600 million dollars.  The company took a bit of a dip in the early nineties  due to the crash of the American stock market but Calvin Klein managed to improve his status and regain the profitability of his empire in the latter part of the decade, largely due to the success of Calvin Klein underwear and the popularity of its fragrance lines and CK sportswear.  Klein was named America’s Best Designer in 1993 for his minimalist all-American designs.

The real success of Calvin Klein underwear came in the mid ’90s during John Varvatos’ time as head of menswear designer, when he pioneered the boxer brief, a hybrid of boxer shorts and briefs famously promoted by an ad campaign in 1992 featuring actor and model Mark Wahlberg shot by Bruce Weber and Richard Avedon.  The campaign propelled Wahlberg to fame, first as hip-hop star “Marky Mark” then on to Hollywood stardom.  Calvin Klein have featured many actors, models and sports stars in their campaigns over the years such as Brooke Shields, Kate Moss, Lara Stone, Christy Turlington and many more.  Recently both Kendall Jenner, Justin Bieber, and Kendrick Lamar starred in an ad campaign dubbed #MyCalvins.  As well as underwear, the stars also modelled the latest in Calvin Klein denim.  The ‘#myCalvins’ creates a sense of unity and and a sense of being part of the Calvin Klein family, as promoted by the latest stars in music, film and the public eye.

Changes to the Calvin Klein logo

In 2017 Calvin Klein rebranded their logo, under the guidance of creative director Raf Simons.  Tweaked and redefined by graphic designer Peter Saville and the in-house creative team at Calvin Klein, the change saw the company name retain its black colour, but move from lower to upper case.  Hailing from Manchester, Peter Saville is best known for his work with Factory Records and for designing artwork for the band Joy Division.  The rebranding is said to be a return to the spirit of the original and to honour the company’s self-named founder and the foundations of the fashion house.
