Italian Glamour with Gucci Kids
With it’s instantly recognisable ‘Double G’ logo and green and red stripes, Gucci is one of the world’s favorite Italian fashion houses. It’s also quickly become a favorite here at Designer Childrens Wear with the Gucci kids collection.
Coming from humble origins in 1921, Gucci was founded by Guccio Gucci in Florence, Italy. Initially selling leather goods in a small Florentine shop, these were inspired by the expensive luggage of guests staying in the elegant hotels of London and Paris, where Guccio worked in his youth.
Due to leather and other material shortages during The Second World War, Gucci produced handbags made of cotton canvas in the 1940’s. Despite the design constraints, these bags featured high quality decoration, most notably the now famous Double G logo and green and red bands. This could arguably be the origin of the supreme canvas bags we see in luxury boutiques (including Designer Childrenswear!) today.
After his death in 1953, Guccio’s sons Aldo and Rodolfo expanded the business to America by opening an office in New York. The brand instantly became popular with film stars and jet setters, making any Gucci product an international status symbol.
The Gucci brand has even lent their design aesthetic to automobiles. In 1973, Gucci teamed up with American Motors Corporation to create the AMC Hornet station wagon, which featured the signature green and red stripes on leather seats and the Gucci family crest on the interior doors. Gucci has collaborated with other car companies over the years, the most recent one was in 2011 with the Fiat 500. The car was created to celebrate the unification of Italy and featured both the green and red stripes and Double G logo.
Loved by celebrities such as Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, Alexa Chung, Chloe Grace Moretz, Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Jared Leto, Tinie Tempah and Will.I.am, it’s no surprise that fashionable parents are thrilled to dress their children in the Gucci kids collection. Launched in 2010 by creative director at the time, Frida Giannini, the Gucci kids collection has gone from strength to strength.
The 2017 Spring / Summer collection is no exception, taking inspiration from classic Gucci, luxe sports wear, animal prints and motifs and a fun circus theme.
